What are the 3 primary functions bones provide? 1. A framework for movement (structure and joints) 2. Protects against external forces 3. Physiological roles (holding calcium, hematopolesis, etc.)
What is the skeletal group that form the center of the body? Axial Skeleton
What is the skeletal group that form your arms and legs? Appendicular Skeleton
What are the areas of the long bones? Diaphysis, Epiphysis, Metaphysis (in children)
What are 3 ways ion channels can be controlled? ligand (neurotransmitter), voltage-gated, stretch-activated
How do ligand-gated ion channels activate? They are activated by the binding of ligands on allosteric binding sites to change the protein confirmation.
What are the 2 main autonomic nervous system branches? Sympathetic for fight/flight response; Parasympathetic to return the body to normal operations.
What kinds of ions are common in the body? Sodium and potassium
How are action and gated potentials different? Action is all-or-nothing, whereas gated is gradual.
What types of cells do efferent neurons control? Smooth muscle, cardiac, and gland cells
