anatomical position the standard reference position for the body; standing with arms hanging at sides with palms forward, gives meaning to directional terms
Golgi apparatus organelle consisting of small sacs stacked on one another near the nucleus that makes carbohydrate compounds, combines them with protein molecules, and packages the product for distribution from the cell
metabolism encompasses all the chemical processes within the body that convert food and drink into energy to sustain life
dehydration synthesis a chemical process where two molecules are joined together, forming a larger molecule with the release of a water molecule
fluid mosaic model the structure of cell membranes, portraying them as a dynamic phospholipid bilayer with proteins embedded within it
integral membrane proteins proteins that are permanently embedded within the cell or organelle's lipid bilayer
skin the body's largest organ, acting as a protective barrier against the external environment.
epidermis outermost protective layer composed of several types of epithelial cells
hydrophilic a particle or substance that is attracted to water
hydrophobic a particle or substance that is not attracted to (or is repelled by) water
