Week 2 Anatomy

Chapter 3 Chemistry

QuestionAnswer
What are the three main parts of a cell? Plasma membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus.
What is Plasma Membrane? A selectively permeable phospholipid bilayer that controls what enters and leaves the cell.
What are the functions of the plasma membrane? Protection, communication, selective permeability, and structural support.
The __________ is the control center of the cell, containing DNA. nucleus
Define Cytoplasm The jelly-like fluid inside the cell where organelles are suspended.
What are organelles? Specialized structures within the cell that perform specific functions.
Define Mitochondria Organelles that generate ATP through cellular respiration.
What is the role of ribosomes? Protein synthesis.
Define Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (RER) Studded with ribosomes; synthesizes and transports proteins.
Define Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (SER Synthesizes lipids and detoxifies chemicals.
What is the function of lysosomes? To digest and remove waste materials and damaged organelles.
The __________ provides structural support and shape to the cell and assists in movement. cytoskeleton
What is the difference between passive and active transport? Passive transport does not require energy; active transport requires ATP.
Define Diffusion Movement of molecules from high to low concentration.
Define Osmosis Diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane.
What is endocytosis? Process where the cell engulfs substances by enclosing them in a vesicle.
What is exocytosis? Process where vesicles fuse with the plasma membrane to release contents outside the cell.
__________ are tiny hair-like structures on the cell surface that help move substances. Cilia
Define Flagella A whip-like tail that enables cell movement.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
