TermDefinition
Long Bones Longer than they are wide, with a shaft and two ends. Femur, tibia, fibula, humerus, radius, ulna,
Short Bones Approximately equal in length, width, and thickness; cube-shaped. Carpals (wrist) and tarsals (ankle)
Flat Bones Thin, flat, and often curved Skull bones ( frontal, parietal), sternum, ribs, scapulae
Irregular Bones Complex shapes that don't fit into other categories; protect internal organs and support various attachments. Vertebrae, facial bones
Diaphysis The shaft or central part of the bone, primarily composed of compact bone.
Epiphyses The ends of the bone, made up of spongy bone covered by a thin layer of compact bone.
Metaphysis The region between the diaphysis and epiphyses, containing the epiphyseal plate (growth plate) in growing bones.
Compact Bone Dense outer layer providing strength and protection.
Spongy Bone Inner layer containing red bone marrow; lighter and less dense.
Periosteum Outer membrane covering the bone, rich in nerves and blood vessels.
Axial Skeleton Skull, vertebral column, rib cage.
Appendicular Skeleton Limbs and girdles (pectoral and pelvic).
Shoulder Girdle (Pectoral Girdle) Clavicle (collarbone) and scapula (shoulder blade).
Pelvic Girdle Two coxal bones (hip bones), each formed by the fusion of the ilium, ischium, and pubis.
