Weeks 1-5

Organelles A structure made of molecules organized in a way to perform specific functions. Organelles are the “tiny organs” that allow each cell to live.
Supine Position The body is lying face upward
Prone Position The body is lying face downward
Proximal Toward or nearest the trunk of the body
Distal Away from or farthest from the trunk
Octet Rule Atoms with fewer than eight electrons in the outer energy level will attempt to lose, gain, or share electrons with other atoms to achieve stability
Microvilli Short fingerlike extensions of plasma membrane; supported internally by microfilaments
Epithelial Tissue One or more layers of densely arranged cells with very little extracellular matrix
Compact bone tissue The type of bone tissue that forms the hard shell of a bone
Strata Cells of the epidermis are found in up to five distinct layers
Stratum Basale A single layer of columnar cells that undergo mitosis and transfer outward from the basal layer until shed from skin surface.
Osteoblasts Small cells that synthesize and secrete an organic matrix called osteoid.
Hyoid U-shaped bone in the neck between the mandible and upper part of the larynx, suspended by ligaments from the styloid processes of the temporal bone
Acetabulum Hip socket; formed by union the of the ilium, ischium, and pubis
