Chapter 15 axial muscles

TermDefinition
What are the main functions of the axial muscles? Support and movement of head, neck, vertebral column; assist in respiration, facial expression, and abdominal compression.
Name the muscle that closes the eyelid. Orbicularis oculi
Which muscle is the main chewing muscle? Masseter
What does the sternocleidomastoid muscle do? Rotates and flexes the head.
Name the three muscles in the erector spinae group. Spinalis, Longissimus, Iliocostalis.
What is the primary muscle used in breathing? Diaphragm
Which muscle group compresses the abdominal contents? Transversus abdominis.
What is the function of the levator ani? Supports pelvic organs and maintains continence.
Name the facial muscles used in facial expression. Frontalis, Orbicularis oculi, Zygomaticus major, Orbicularis oris
What are the muscles of the vertebral column? Spinalis, Longissimus, Iliocostalis
