What cells live in the epidermis? Keratinocytes = make keratin Melanocytes = make melanin Langerhans = immune defense Merkel = touch sensation
What are the 5 layers of the epidermis (deep to surface)? Basale Spinosum Granulosum Lucidum (only in thick skin) Corneum
What’s in the dermis? Hair follicles, blood vessels, nerves, sweat/oil glands, connective tissue.
What’s the job of the hypodermis? Stores fat, insulates, cushions organs.
What are sebaceous glands? Oil glands that secrete sebum to soften skin/hair.
What’s the difference between eccrine and apocrine sweat glands? Eccrine = all over, cool body Apocrine = armpits/groin, active at puberty
What are functions of the skin? 6 things Protection Sensation Temp control Vitamin D production Excretion Immune defense
What is melanin? A pigment made by melanocytes that gives skin its color and protects from UV rays.
