SAT- Unit 5- Half-Hanged Mary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Half-Hanged | someone who was hanged but survived, either because the rope was not properly set or because they were pulled down before death |
| Indictment | being charged or accused of something horrible |
| Coven | a group or gathering of witches who meet regularly |
| Excommunication | to banish someone from a church or, in broader terms, to exclude them from a group or community |
| Pious | devoutly religious |
| Martyr | a person who is killed because of their religious or other beliefs. |
| Crone | an ugly old woman |
| Superstition | a widely held belief in the supernatural leading to certain consequences. Ex. breaking a mirror is "seven years bad luck" or "knock on wood!" to avoid being jinxed |
| Tyranny | cruel and oppressive government or rule. |
| Chaste | can either mean avoiding sexual activity before marriage to stay "pure" OR something that is very simple and plain that avoids ornamentation |
| Apostate | a person who renounces a religious or political belief or principle. |
| Blasphemy | the act or offense of speaking sacrilegiously about God or sacred things; profane talk |
| Strappado | A form of torture where the victim was taken to a great height and dropped by their tethered hands to the ground. The rope was just long enough they didn't make impact, and the fall would dislocate their shoulders. This was done multiple times :( |
