SAT- Unit 3- The Gift of the Magi

| Magi | A member of a priestly class. Think "the 3 wise men" from the Bible who gave Jesus gifts. |
| subside | become less intense, violent, or severe |
| predominating | the strongest or main element |
| imputation | a charge or claim that someone has done something undesirable; an accusation. |
| parsimonious | unwilling to spend money or use resources; stingy or frugal. |
| mendicancy | the state of being a beggar or the practice of begging for alms or charity |
| meretricious | apparently attractive but having in reality no value or integrity...so...pretty on the outside but worthless |
| imputation | an accusation of having done something undesirable |
| depreciate | to lose value over time |
| fob chain | a chain attached to a watch for carrying in a waistcoat or waistband pocket. |
| pier glass | a large mirror, used originally to fill wall space between windows. |
| chaste | can either mean a person who is trying to stay pure until marriage OR something simple and without ornamentation |
| singed | slightly burned or scorched |
| scrutiny | critical observation or examination of something |
| laboriously | doing something in a way that takes considerable time and effort. |
| truant | any intentional, unjustified, unauthorized, or illegal absence |
| longitudinal | running lengthwise rather than across. |
| enfolded | to surround or envelop something |
| patent | a fact that is clearly recognizable |
| chronicle | a factual written account of important or historical events in the order of their occurrence. |
| bosom | can express a close relationship between companions OR to a woman's chest. |
