Good laws are fair, reasonable, understandable, enforceable

felonies a crime, typically one involving violence, regarded as more serious than a misdemeanor and usually punishable by imprisonment for more than one year or by death
Misdemeanors a minor wrongdoing
Bail is a sum of money an arrested person pays to a court to win release from jail while awaiting trial
Plea bargaining negotiation between the defense attorney and the prosecutor who is the governments theory
Search Warrant judge's authorization- specifying the exact place to be searched and describing what objects may be seized.
Parole early release granted by parole board
Mandatory Sentencing judges must improve whatever sentence the law directs
Juvenile All states have separate justice systems under 18 years of age Goal- rehabilitate Trial preliminary hearing (no jury, closed to public)
Juvenile Delinquents young people who commit crimes
Cross - examine after a witness testifies for one side the other side is allowed to cross examine (ask questions)
Discovery both sides check facts and gather evidence
Settlement both parties agree on an amount of money that the defendant will pay to the plaintiff.
Testimony the answers they give while under oath- will be the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.
Acquittal Not guilty
Rehabilitate or correct a person's behavior, rather than punish a person.
4 Amendment Protects individuals from unreasonable searches and seizures by the government
5 Amendment Protects against self- incrimination and serious federal charges cannot be brought without a grand jury's approval
6 Amendment Protects the rights of individuals accused of crimes, guarantees a fair trial and have rights during legal process
8 Amendment prohibits excessive bail, excessive fines and cruel and unusual punishments
