Klemens von Metternich (1773-1859) - Leader of Congress of Vienna - Influencer prime minister of his time - Had conservative ideologies - In charge of establishing Congress of Vienna ideas
Liberalism People as free as possible and maintained their basic rights
Laissez-Faire State stays away from the economy
Nationalism Government and nationality align
Conservatism Obedience to the old system; no revolutions
Edmund Burke - Wrote "Reflections on the Revolution in France" (1790) -Began conservatism basically - Disliked overthrow of government from revolutions but wasn't against gradual change - His ideas: sudden change bad, slow change good
Romanticism Emotion that reason, emphasis on nature, praising the common man
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe - Wrote "The Sorrows of Young Werther" (1774) - Story about young man rejected by society & a women he can;t have so commits suicide - Main romantic author in Germany
Lord Byron - Wrote "She walks in Beauty" (1814) - Dramatic; finds the beauty in nature
William Wordsworth (1770-1850) - Wrote "The Tables Turned" (1798) - Message was that spending time with nature is better than with man - Romantic poem because of spiritual & supernatural themes - Vernal wood (spiritual)
Eugene Delacroix - Made "The 28th July; Liberty Leading the People" (1830) - Woman in painting symbolizes liberty as she stands in place with massacre & war - Romantic because dramatic, emotional, emphasizes individualism
Caspar David Friedrich - Made "The Wandered Above the Sea of Fog" (1818) - Mystical - Nature - Nationalistic because of German states - Liberal
Revolutions of 1830 -Greek Revolt was when they rebelled against Ottomans; Greeks won because Russia involved -Britain compromised through slow reforms -Second FR regarding Charles X clashing with liberals; want new leader, hence Louis Phillippe I
1819 Karlsbad Decrees - Outlawed public gatherings in Prussia - Burschenachaften banned (men of honor with scars) - Done in order to prevent reactionists & establish conservatism
Greeks Revolution (1821-30) Rebelled against Ottomans with Russia
Louis Phillippe I After Charles X, tries to fix France into a constitutional state; fails
Revolutions of 1848 -Unsuccessful revolutions -Austria: Hungarians wanted own state but didn't happen due to many minorities -Prussia: Attempted German creation but no approval from Frederick IV -France: Louis Phillippe I tries to change France but fails; new Napoleon III
Austria: France Joseph I (1848-1916) - Crushed Hungarians with help of 140,000 Russians because of attempted revolution - Emperor of Austria
Prussia: Frederick William IV (1840-61) Says no to National Assembly to create Germany
