chap 12 nervous sys

QuestionAnswer
Afferent neuron The neuron that brings information into the central nervous system.
Interneuron The neuron that carries impulses only in the central nervous system.
Microglia A type of neuroglia that is phagocytic.
Astrocytes A type of neuroglia that is star shaped.
31 pairs The number of pairs of spinal nerves.
Satellite cells Cells that surround the sensory perikaryons in the dorsal root ganglia.
Nodes of Ranvier Unmyelinated gaps on a myelinated neuron.
Schwann cells Cells that secrete myelin in the PNS.
Oligodendrocytes Cells that secrete myelin in the CNS.
Enteric nervous system The division of the PNS that controls the visceral muscle of the digestive tract.
Autonomic nervous system The division of the nervous system that controls homeostasis in the body.
Dendrites Structures that carry impulses to the cell body of the neuron.
1. Define the functions of the nervous system. sensory, integrative, and motor
2- Major parts of the nervous system. CNS (brain and spinal cord), and PNS
3-Define Peripheral nervous system connects to CNS to muscle, glands and all sensory receptors
4-Differentiate between the somatic and autonomic divisions. somatic: motor division skeleton muscle autonomic: sympathetic and parasympathetic (smooth muscle, GI tract glands, and cardiac muscle)
5- Functional classification of neuron classified based on direction of nerve impulse propagation
Label the 3 Neuron types motor, sensory, and interneuron
7-Differentiate between white and gray matter white: white sand dollar / myelinated axons and neuroglia grey: evil grey butterfly/ cell bodies, axons, dendrites, and neuroglia
8-define the neuroglia of CNS oligodendrocyte, astrocyte, and microglia
9-define the neuroglia of PNS schwann cells and satellite cells
10-functions of Myelin Sheath: used for insulation, increased speed of nerve impulse, and aids in regeneration
Nervous Tissue A body tissue that carries electrical messages back and forth between the brain and every other part of the body.
1. The _________neuron bring information into the central nervous system. efferent/motor neuron
2. The _________ carries impulses only in the central nervous system. interneuron
3. The _______________ is a type of neuroglia that is phagocytic. microglia
4. The _____________________ is a type of neuroglia that is star shaped. astrocyte
5. There are ____________pairs of spinal nerves. 31
6. The _______________ cells surround the sensory perikayons in the dorsal root ganglia. satellite cells
7. The ____________________ are unmyelinated gaps on a myelinated neuron. nodes of ranvier
8 The _________________ secretes myelin in the PNS. schwann cells
9. The __________________ secrete myelin in the CNS. oligodendrocyte
10. Which division of the PNS controls the visceral muscle of digestive tract? enteric plexus
11. Which division of the Nervous system controls homeostasis in the body? autonomic nervous system
