TermDefinition
Canvass an act or process of attempting to secure votes or ascertain opinions.
Precinct: contiguous area within which all electors go to a single polling place to cast their ballots.
Platform: outlines goals to appeal to voters and gain supporters.
Patronage after winning an election, gives government jobs to its supporters, friends Straight ticket
Split ticket a ballot cast by a voter who votes for candidates of more than one party.
Independent voter Voter not assigned to a specific party
Self-nomination Instead of someone else nominating you, you say your self you are running
Write-in candidate a candidate whose name does not appear on the ballot but seeks election by asking voters to cast a vote by writing in their name
Caucus a closed meeting of a group of persons belonging to the same political party or faction usually to select candidates or to decide on policy
Direct primary a form of election in which voters directly choose a political party's candidates for office
Closed primary if you chose Democratic or Republican as your party on your Voter Registration Application, you may vote only for candidates from your own party
Open primary a primary election in which voters are not required to declare party affiliation
Primary election election to appoint delegates to a party conference or to select the candidates for a principal, especially presidential, election.
General election a regular election of candidates for office, as opposed to a primary election.
PAC short for political action committee.
Campaign manager oversees all aspects of a political, marketing, or advertising campaign,
Incumbent the holder of an office or post.
