Central nervous system the brain and spinal cord
peripheral nervous system nerves connecting brain and spinal cord to other parts of the body
Autonomic nervous system division of the nervous system that monitors and regulates subconscious (involuntary)
sympathetic division part of the autonomic nervous system; ganglia are connected to the thoracic and lumbar regions of the spinal cord; functions in “fight or flight” response
parasympathetic division part of the autonomic nervous system; ganglia are connected to the brainstem and the sacral segments of the spinal cord; controls many autonomic effectors under normal (“rest and repair”) conditions
Erythrocytes red blood cell
leukocyes White blood cell
Epicardium inner layer of the pericardium that covers the surface of the heart; it is also called the visceral pericardium
myocardium muscle of the heart
arteries vessel vessel carrying blood away from the heart
capillaries tiny vessels that connect arterioles and venules; gas exchange from blood to tissues occurs in capillaries
veins vessel carrying blood from capillaries toward the heart
lympathic system system that plays a critical role in the functioning of the immune system; moves fluids and large molecules from the tissue spaces and fat-related nutrients from the digestive system to the blood
innate immunity type of immunity that exists prior to exposure to a specific antigen and that can recognize and destroy a variety of harmful agents or conditions
adaptive immunity type of immunity in which specific antigens or particles are recognized, then targeted for destruction; also called acquired immunity or specific immunity
upper respiratory tract respiratory organs that are not contained within the thorax; includes nasal cavity, pharynx, and associated structures
lower respiratory tract region of the respiratory tract that consists of the trachea, all segments of the bronchial tree, and the lungs
