Any muscle that performs an action is a mover. What do the terms insertion and origin mean in regards to a moving muscle? Origin- the point of attachment that does not move when the muscle contracts. Insertion- point of attachment that does move when the muscle contracts.
What is the anatomical path of travel a nerve impulse takes through a neuron? Dendrites, Cell body, Axon hillock, axon (covered my myelin sheath, node of ranvier is the gap between the myelin sheath), telodendria, synaptic knobs.
Sensory information is carried into the spinal cord by what? Away from? Dorsal nerve root(posterior nerve root) carry sensory information toward the spinal cord. Ventral nerve root(anterior nerve root) carries information out of or away from the spinal cord.
What are the 6 major divisions of brain? From spinal cord up-Medulla Oblongata, pons, midbrain, cerebellum, diencephalon, cerebrum
What are the 12 cranial nerves? 1. Olfactory 2. Optic 3. Oculomotor 4. Trochlear 5. Trigeminal 6. Abducens 7. Facial 8. Vestibulocochlear 9. Glossopharyngeal 10. Vagus 11. Accessory 12. Hypoglossal
What are the primary neurotransmitters of the autonomic nervous system and what receptors do they bind to? Epinephrine & norepinephrine- binds to adrenergic receptors (alpha & beta), stimulates sympathetic nervous system acetylcholine- binds to cholinergic receptors (muscarinic & nicotinic), stimulates parasympathetic nervous system
Name four tropic hormones. Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)-growth of thyroid Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)- growth of adrenal gland Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)- stimulates structures within ovaries Luteinizing hormone (LH)- stimulates corpius leuteum of the ovary.
Where are the tropic hormones produced and what do they do overall? Produced and secreted by basophils of the pars anterior. Tropic hormones stimulate other endocrine glands.
Name the muscular layers of the heart from most superficial to deep. Epicardium, myocardium, endocardium
What are the chambers and valves of the heart? Right and left atria Right and left ventricles Atrioventricular valves (cuspid)- tricuspid (right), mitral (left) Semilunar valves- pulmonary (right), aortic (left)
The protein inside red blood cells that give it a distinctive red coloring? hemoglobin
Function of red blood cells in the body? Transport oxygen, nutrients into the body. Transport carbon dioxide, and other wastes out of the body.
What are the different types of white blood cells and their percentages in the body? Neutrophils- 65-75% Lymphocytes- 20-25% Monocytes- 3-8% Eosinophils- 2-5% Basophils- 1/2-1%
