TermDefinition
Lobbying Interest groups activities aimed at convincing lawmakers to support the group's positions
Lobbyists A person who conducts activities aimed at influencing public officials (legislators)
Interest group A group of people with common goals who organize to influence government
Public opinion The desires, wants, and thinking of the majority of the people; it is the collective opinion of the people of a society or state on an issue or problem
Peer groups Groups of people who are similar in age and stage of life
Political socialization The process by which we develop our political attitudes, values, and beliefs
Political culture The basic norms for political activity in a society
Population/universe The group of people that a poll is attempting to learn about
Random sample A sample that fairly represents a population because each member has an equal chance of being chosen
Sampling error A measurement of how much the sample results may differ from the population/universe
Mass media All forms of communication that reach a large portion of the public
News release A story written by a press agent and given to the media
News briefing A government official makes an announcement or explains a policy, decision, or action
Leak The release of secret information by anonymous government officials to the media
Media event A planned event created to promote a politician's position and improve their public perception
Fake news False and/or misleading information that often has the aim of damaging the reputation of a person or enemy
Bias news The tendency of media to report in a way that reinforces a viewpoint, worldview, preference, or political ideology
Libel A published false statement that is damaging to a person's reputation; a written defamation
Slander The action or crime of making a false spoken statement damaging to a person's reputation
Deep fakes The manipulation of facial appearance through deep generative (technology) methods
AI Used to create convincing images, videos, and audio that is not the work of a human artist
