QuestionAnswer
Initiative electoral devices by which voters may express their wishes with regard to government policy or proposed legislation.
Referendum a general vote by the electorate on a single political question that has been referred to them for a direct decision.
Lieutenant governor an elected official who is an assistant to the governor of a U.S. state
Line-item veto a power that allows a president, governor, etc., to officially reject specific parts of a proposed bill without rejecting the entire bill
Council of State ten elected officials, each serving as the chief executive of their respective departments
Ordinance a local law or rule created by a municipal government
Municipality a city or town that has corporate status and local government.
Local charter defines and limits the powers, duties and responsibility of local government based on local preferences and desires
Special district a limited-purpose local government, independent of cities and counties, formed to provide specific services like fire protection, water supply, or parks
Utilities a service (such as light, power, or water)
Zoning to establish and preserve areas suitable for transitional uses between more intensive commercial activities and residential use
Property tax a locally assessed tax, collected by the counties
Intergovernmental revenue funds received by one level of government (e.g., state, county, city) from another level, such as federal grants or state aid.
Grant a sum of money awarded by a government, foundation, or other organization to an individual or organization for a specific purpose
Home rule refers to the power granted to a local municipality to exercise its own governance
