| Approval rating | measured by pollsters asking whether the respondent approves, yes or no, of the presidents Jon performances. |
| Benchmark polls | First type of poll used by a political campaign, often before a potential candidate has declared his or her intentions |
| Entrance polls | A poll that is taken before voters have cast their votes at the polling stations |
| Exit polls | A surgery conducted with voters immediately after they have cast their votes on Election Day. |
| Focus groups | A small group of citizens -10 to 40 people- who are gathered to hold conversations about issues or candidates |
| Push Polling | A surgery that often involves asking leading questions that are designed to elicit a specific response. Controversial technique |
| Random digit dialing | A method used in surveys where telephone numbers are selected at random from a given population to gather data on public opinion |
| Random Sample | A method of poll selection that gives each person in a group the same chance of being selected |
| Representative Sample (Universe) | A sample from a larger group that accurately represents the characteristics of a larger population, known as universe |
| Sampling error (margin of error) | The difference between poll results |
| Tracking polls | Allow a campaign to "track" issues and how a candidate is faring with voters |
| Weighting (stratification) | A procedure in which the survey is adjusted according to the demographics of the larger population |
| Bandwagon effect | A shift of support to a candidate or position holding the lead in public opinion polls and therefore believed to be endorsed by many people |
| Bradley Effect | A theory suggesting that some voters may tell pollsters they are undecided or likely to vote for a minority candidate to avoid appearing racist, but then vote differently in the privacy of the polling booth. |
| Non-response bias | occurs when certain individuals chosen for a surgery or poll do not respond, leading to an incomplete picture of public opinion |
| Social desirability bias | the tendency for respondents and declared voters to tell pollsters what they think they want to hear. |
