| Term | Definition |

| Jurisdiction | The area of which an official has the ability to make decisions or rulings. |
| Appellate Court/Circuit Court/Court of Appeals | A higher court that reviews the District Court's decision. They simply check to see if the law was correctly applied. |
| Judicial Review | A power that the courts may use to ensure the other branches actions are constitutional. |
| Majority Opinion | The opinion held by more than half of the judges. |
| Concurring Opinion | A judge who has written an opinion in agreement with the majority decision but for different reasons. |
| Dissenting Opinion | A judge who has written an opinion disagreeing with the majority opinion. |
| Precedent | A court ruling that provides a ground to be followed in future cases. Like a ‘stepping stone’. |
| Stare Decisis | When deciding a case's ruling, courts are expected to stand by previous precedents. In Latin, it means “stand by things decided.” |
| Court Packing | When the number of seats in the Supreme Court is increased to push for an ideological belief (dem. or rep.). |
| Judicial Restraint/strict constructionism | An idea that encourages Supreme Court judges to limit their powers to uphold laws and previous precedents. Simply, it is when judges focus on the written words of the Constitution as not to conflict with other branches. |
| Judicial Activism/loose constructionism | When judges actively take part in interpreting the law and making impactful decisions that could become future precedents. Simply, it is when judges more loosely interpret the Constitution. |
