Marbury v. Madison Established the principle of judicial review
McCulloch v Maryland DEclared that the fed gov had the power to make a bank and the states had NO right to tax gov. Established power between states and national gov. Necessary and Proper clause.
United States v Lopez Scotus ruled that the federal Gun-free school zones act of 1990 was unconstitutional because the U.S. Congress had exceeded it's authority under the commerce clause of the constitution. First time in many years court sided with the state.
Baker V Carr decided that redistricting issues presents justiciable questions, thus enabling federal courts to intervene in and to decide reappointment cases.
Shaw V Reno Established that redistricting plans that segregate voters by race is unconstitutional. Happened because of NC redrew its congressional districts in a distinct snake the manner to create a "majority-minority" Black district.
Engel v. Vitale The court ruled that school-organized prayer in public schools violates the first amendment's Establishment Clause
Schenck v United States case that established the "clear and present danger'" test
Wisconsin v Yoder Ruled that the Amish community right to freely exercise their religion, by not sending their children to school past the 8th grade, outweighing the state of Wisconsin's requirement for education until age 16.
Brown v. Board of Education Ruled racial segregation in public schools to be unconstitutional
Tinker v. Des Moines established the principle that students in publics schools retain their First Amendment right to free speech. happened bcs kids wore black armbands to protest against the Vietnam War
New York Times v. USA Established a strong presumption against "prior restraint" in unconstitutional
Gideon v. Wainwright ruled that the 6th Amendment right to an attorney applies to state and federal criminal proceedings
Citizen v. FEC The court found that laws restricting the political spending of corporations and unions are inconsistent with the Free Speech Clause of the First Amendment
McDonald V. Chicago expanded the right to keep and bear arms to apply to state and local governments.
