Anatomical directions and planes

Dorsal / Posterior toward the back
Ventral / Anterior toward the front
Superior above
Inferior below
medial towards the midline of the body
lateral farther away from the body
distal farther from the core
sagittal plane slices an object down the middle making a left half and a right half
frontal plane slices an object into a front and back half
transverse plane divides and object into a upper and lower half
