Reproductive system

Name the male gonads and list their main functions Testes; produce sex cells called sperm, produce hormone testosterone
Name the female gonads and list their main functions Ovaries; produce sex cells called ova (oocytes, eggs), secrete sex hormones called estrogen and progesterone
What does estrogen and progesterone do? Regulate the menstrual cycle and development of female sexual characteristics.
How many chromosomes do sex cells have? How many do other body cells have? Sex cells have 1 set; 23 chromosomes. Other body cells have 2 sets; 46 chromosomes
Define Haploid Having one set of chromosomes
Define Diploid Having two sets of chromosomes
Gonads produce what? Hormones and gametes (sex cells)
What is meiosis? The type of cell division that produces sperm and oocytes (egg cells); Reduces the number of chromosomes by half to form sex cells (like sperm and eggs)
Explain the differences and similarities between meiosis and mitosis Mitosis produces 2 genetically identical daughter cells with the same number of chromosomes as the parent cell. Meiosis produces 4 genetically distinct daughter cells with half the number of chromosomes as the parent cell
Explain major steps of meiosis. Explain when, how, and why crossing over takes place `
Name the primary sex organs of the male reproductive system and give their functions.
Meiosis I separates what? Separates homologous chromosomes
Meiosis II separates what? Separates sister chromatids
