| What are communicable diseases? | They are diseases that can be trans-mitted from one person to another. |
| What does it mean for the body to be in homeostasis? | It is the maintenance of relatively constant internal conditions despite changes in either the internal or the external environment. |
| What are carbohydrates? | Carbohydrates are organic compounds containing carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen in certain specific proportions - Some examples are sugars and starches. |
| What are amino acids? | Amino acids are a type of chemical unit from which proteins are built. |
| What is the difference between hydrophilic and hydrophobic? | When a molecule is hydrophilic it loves water and it is therefore able to interact with water. When a molecule is hydrophobic it is fearful of water, and it is unable to to interact with water. |
| What is HDL?: | HDL is high-density lipoprotein. HDL is a blood lipid fraction composed of cholesterol, about 50% protein, and triglycerides; often called “good cholesterol” because it carries cholesterol out of the blood to the liver for elimination. |
| What is LDL? | LDL is low-density lipoprotein. LDL is a blood lipid fraction composed of more cholesterol and triglycerides than protein; often called “bad cholesterol” because high levels contribute to athero-sclerotic plaque formation and arterial wall damage. |
| What is atherosclerosis? | A type of “hardening of the arteries” in which lipids and other substances build up on the inside wall of blood vessels. |
