| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Quadriceps (front of thigh) Responsible for extending the knee and assists in hip flexion | Rectus Femoris (crosses hip and knee),Vastus Lateralis (outer thigh) Vastus Medialis (inner thigh) Vastus Intermedius (deep under rectus femoris) |
| Hamstrings (back of thigh) These muscles are responsible for knee flexion and hip extension | Biceps Femoris ( has a long and short head), Semitendinosis, Semimembranosus |
| Adductors (Inner thigh) Responsible for bring leg toward midline and stablizing thigh) | Adductor longus, Adductor Brevis, Adductor Magnus, Gracilis, Pectineus |
| Sartorius (Thigh muscle)( assists in abduction, knee flexion, external rotation) | longest muscle in the body, origin : anterior superior iliac spine, insertion : tibia |
| Gastrocnemius (the visible muscle gives calf it's shape)( planter and knee flexion) | Medial head and Lateral head |
| Soleus (planter flexion) | deeper flat muscle under gastrocnemius, endurance based movements |
| Plantaris (planter flexion considered vestigial) | small thin muscle runs alongside gastrocnemius |
| Achilles tenden (planter flexion) | the strongest and largest tendon, connects calf muscles gastrocnemius and soleus) to heel bone (calcaneus) |
| Rectus abdominis (6 pack)(spinal flexion) | vertically down the front(crunches leg raises ab rollouts) |
| Eternal obliques (outer most side abs) | trunk rotation ,lateral flexion ,and compression |
| Internal obliques (beneath external obliques) | trunk rotation lateral flexion and deep core stability |
| Transverse abdominis (deepest core muscle) | wraps like a corset, provides spinal stability poster and support |
