| Nerve Cells | Detect changes in internal or external. Transmits nerve impulses from one part of the body to another. Structural features consist of surface that is sensitive to stimuli, long extensions. |
| Muscle Cells | Contract (shorten) to allow movement of body parts. Structural features contain elongated, threadlike, tiny fibers that slide together forcefully. |
| Red Blood Cells | Transport of oxygen in the bloodstream (from lungs to other parts of the body). Contains hemoglobin, a red pigment that attracts then releases oxygen. |
| Antagoinsts | Muscles that when contracting directly oppose prime movers. They are relaxed while the prime mover is contracting to produce movement. |
| Synergists | Are Muscles that contract at the same time as the prime movers. The facilitate or complement prime mover actions so that the prime mover produces a more effective movement. |
| Fixator muscles | The frequently serve to maintain posture or balance during contraction of prime movers acting on joints in the arms and legs. |
| Connective Tissue | Connects tissues to each other. Supports framework for body and organs. Transports substances between body parts. Defends against micro-organisms. |
| Epithelial tissue | Protection: Mechanical, chemical, injury, and bacteria. Excretion: Urine, via kidneys. Sensory: skin, nose, eyes, and ears. Absorption: nutrients from the gut, respiratory gas exchange. Secretion hormones, mucus, sweat. |
| Micovilli | Found in epithelial cells that line the intestines and other areas where absorption is important. |
| Stratum Corneum (horny layer) | Several layers of flakelike dead cells (corneocytes) mostly made up of dense networks of keratin fibers cemented bye glycophospholipids and forming a tough waterproof barrier. |
| Stratum Lucidum (clear layer) | A few layers of squamous cells filled with eleidin. |
| Stratum granulosum (granular layer) | 2-5 layers of dying somewhat flattened cells filled with darkly staining keratohyalin granules and multilayered bodies of glycophospholipids; nuclei disappear in this layer. |
| Stratum spinosum (spiny layer) | 8-10 layers of cells pulled by desmosomes into a spiny apperance. |
