| Bureaucracy | a system of government in which most of the important decisions are made by state officials rather than by elected representatives. |
| Cabinet | The advisory group selected by the president to aid him in making decisions and coordinating the work of the federal government |
| Administration | the planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, and controlling of government operations. |
| Treaties | written agreements between sovereign states |
| Executive privilege | the authority to withhold documents in the possession of the Executive Branch from the Legislative or Judicial Branch of the government. |
| Courts of Appeals | review challenges to court decisions to determine whether the proceedings were fair and the law was applied correctly. |
| Circuit courts | generally handle more serious criminal cases and major civil cases |
| Precedent | an earlier event or action that is regarded as an example or guide to be considered in subsequent similar circumstances |
| Original jurisdiction | a court's authority to hear and decide a case for the first time before any appellate review occurs |
