| Definition | |
|---|---|
| Sagittal Plane | Divides body into right and left sides |
| Coronal Plane | Divides body into front and back sides |
| Transverse Plane | Divides body into upper and lower sections |
| Oblique Planes | Divides body into slanted sections |
| Acid | Substance that releases a hydrogen ion when in solution (Ex: hydrochloric acid) |
| Base | "Alkaline" substances are electrolytes that increase hydroxide ions or decrease hydrogen ions when in solution (Ex: sodium hydroxide) |
| Cell Structures | ER (smooth or rough), Golgi Apparatus (package products), Vesicles (contain molecules), Lysosomes (contain enzymes), Peroxisomes (detoxifies), Mitochondria (powerhouse), Nucleus (contains DNA) |
| Phospholipid Bilayer | Hydrophilic heads on either side of the membrane & hydrophobic tails that point toward each other |
| Epithelial Tissue | Covers body surface, lines cavities, moves and secretes substances (Ex: out skin, linings of vital organs, glands) |
| Connective Tissue | Supports, holds and transports substances (Ex: bones, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, blood, fat) |
| Muscle Tissue | Shortens or lengthens to provide movement (Ex: heart, skeletal muscles, walls of organs) |
| Nervous Tissue | Communication of complex messages (Ex: tissue of brain & spinal cord, nerves, sensory organs) |
| Epithelium | Stratum Basale (deepest/contain stem cells), Stratum spinosum (cells enlarge/develop spines), Stratum Granulosum (accumulate granules of keratin/lipids), Stratum Lucidum (clear layer of palms/soles of feet), Stratum Corneum (outermost/dead cells) |
| Axial Skeleton | Skull, Vertebral Column, Rib Cage |
| Appendicular Skeleton | Limbs, Pelvis, Hands, Feet |
| Parathyroid Glands | Osteoclasts (break calcium from bone to deposit into blood stream) & Osteoblasts (pull calcium from blood stream into bone) |
| Muscle Cell | Sarcolemma (membrane), Sarcoplasmic Reticulum (stores calcium), T Tubules (transmits impulses) |
| Muscle Contraction | Motor neurons receive signals from acetylcholine, ACh contracts sarcolemma of muscle cell, stored calcium release and bind to troponin & expose them, myosin bind to exposed troponin and cause a chain reaction of contraction |
