Characteristics of Life and Metabolism Review Notes

Anatomy the structure of body parts (also called morphology)
Physiology the function of the body parts, what they do and how they do it
Digestion Chemically & physically changing (breaking down) food substances, and getting rid of wastes
Absorption Passage of Digested products (food substances) through membranes and into body fluids
Assimilation Changing absorbed substances into chemically different substances
Excretion Removal of wastes
Metabolism all the chemical changes that occur in the body to maintain life.
Homeostasis the process by which the body maintains stable internal environment despite external changes
Negative feedback loop the process that works to maintain balance or stability within the body by counteracting or reversing change
positive feedback loop the process that amplifies or increase a change rather the counteracting it
Movement self initiated change in position, motion of internal parts
Responsiveness Ability to sense changes and react to them
Growth increase in body size
Reproduction Parents produce offspring / passing DNA to new individuals
Respiration Obtaining oxygen (O2), using it to release energy from food substances, and getting rid of wastes
Circulation Movement of substances throughout the body
