Lateral Away from the center line of the body
Proximal In our limbs, to be closer to the central body
Distal In our limbs, to be farther from the central body
Superficial To be close to the body surface
Deep To be away from the body surface
Inferior Below another part

Medial Toward the center line of the body
Anterior In front of another part
Posterior Behind another part
Sagittal Plane Imaginary surface that splits the body into left and right sides
Frontal Plane Imaginary surface that splits the body into anterior and posterior halves
Transverse Plane Imaginary surface that splits the body into superior and inferior halves
Integumentary System Organ system that forms the physical barrier of the body, regulates homeostasis, and produces vitamin D
Lymphatic System Organ system that prevents and reduces infections as well as regulating fluid levels in tissues
Endocrine System Organ system that regulates the body by producing hormones
Spinal Cavity Structure that protects the spinal cord
Cranial Cavity Structure designed to protect the brain
Abdominal Cavity Structure that holds and protects organs such as the stomach, liver, and intestines
Pelvic Cavity Structure that holds the internal reproductive organs, bladder, and lower digestive tract
Thoracic Cavity Structure that protects organs such as the heart and lungs
Body cavities spaces in the body that contain, protect, separate, and support internal organs
Skeletal System Body support and structure; allows movement; makes blood cells; protects organs; stores minerals such as calcium
Muscular System Causes movements by contracting and relaxing
Nervous System Carries electrical signals throughout the body to control thoughts and responses
Cardiovascular System Transportation of oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste products throughout the body
Respiratory System Exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the body and the atmosphere
Digestive System Breaks down food, absorbs nutrients, and eliminates waste
Urinary System Filters blood and removes waste by producing and excreting urine
Reproductive System Produces and sustains sperm and egg cells, enables fertilization, and supports developing offspring
