Bureaucracy Vocab

| Term | Definition |

| Bureaucracy | Employees who work within the Executive branch. Their ultimate goal is to help ensure proper execution of the law. |
| Regulations (bureaucratic) | An rule or instruction given by a executive agency that generally has the force of law. |
| Iron Triangles (in govt) | An idea that Congress (House and Senate), federal departments/agencies, and interest groups work together in policy-making. |
| Political Patronage | Bureaucratic officials being appointed regardless of qualifications. |
| Civil Service | A term for a bureaucracy that is comprised of workers with expertise in their area of work. |
| Merit System | Employment and/or promotions based on skill/performance rather than political association. |
| The Hatch Act | A federal law the limits federal workers from doing certain political actions (except voting). This is to ensure workers are acting in non partisan ways. |
| Independent Regulatory Commissions | A section of the bureaucracy that is seperate from Congress and the president. They are responsible for creating regulations to protect the public. |
| Government Corporations | A part of the bureaucracy that operates to sell goods and/or services. Generally, they will compete with private businesses. |
| Independent Executive/Administrative Agencies | Organizations that exist separately from the Executive Departments. They generally will have a specific goal/task. |
| Discretionary Authority | The ability of an agency to make decisions with their own judgement. |
| Appropriations | Spending approved by Congress for a specific purpose. |
| Implementation | Actions taken to execute laws (ex. Spending or bureaucratic rules). |
| Red Tape | Excessive government regulations/rules that hinder the bureaucracies decision making. |
| Sunset Clause | Expiration date on a law. |
| Sunshine Laws | Regulations that require government agencies to openly conduct certain proceedings. These laws can vary from state and help promote transparency within the government. |
| Whistleblower | An individual who reveals wrongdoings from an agency/organization (ex. information, actions). |
| Congressional Oversight | The power for Congress to check or monitor for proper execution of policy in the the Executive branch. |
