Executive Branch Vocabulary (AP Gov)

TermDefinition
Coattail Effect When a president is able to attract voters for other candidates.
Legitimacy The idea that the government has the right to make the rules
Electoral Mandate When a president is elected by a clear majority, they push for certain parts of their campaign.
Presidential Veto A rejection of a bill from a President
Pocket Veto A rejection of a bill when the President takes no action on the bill for 10 days.
Treaty An agreement between 2 or more countries. In the US, it must be approved by 2/3 of the Senate.
Executive Agreement An international unification made by the president and another government. (Informal power)
Executive Order A mandatory declaration made by the President (w/ congressional approval) to the executive branch. These orders are often as powerful as laws. (Informal power)
Signing Statement An announcement from the president following the signing of a bill. In the statement, it includes how the administration will interpret the law.
Department Secretary People who are part of the President’s Cabinet and manages operations of their agency/department.
Bureaucracy A organization that is operated by non-elected officials
Chief of State Another name to describe the President as a symbol for the nation.
Wonk A person who thoroughly enjoys their job and spend a great deal of time studying their profession. These types of people work in the Executive Offices and provide advice to President to help carry out the administration's goals. Synonyms include, ‘dweeb’,
