Nerve Tissue
Structure and Function of Nerve Tissue
| Tissue | Structure and Function |
|---|---|
| Neuron cell body | Regulates the functioning of the neuron |
| Axon | Carries electrical impulses away from the cell body |
| Dendrites | Carry electrical impulses towards the cell body |
| Synapse | Transmits impulses from one neuron to others by means of chemicals |
| Neurotransmitters | Transmits impulses across the synapse |
| Neuroglia | Form myelin sheaths within the central nervous system and can not regenerate. |
| Schwann cells | Forms myelin sheaths within the peripheral nervous system and can regenerate. |
| Synapse | Space between axon of one neuron and the dendrite or cell body of the next neuron |
| Neurotransmitters | Chemicals released by axons |
