32. What was the British government's response to colonial grievances? 32. They ignored them and punished them with stronger/harsher laws and taxes.
33. What were some of the complaints addressed in the Declaration of Independence? 33. Taxation without representation, suspending trials by jury, limiting judicial powers, quartering soldiers without their consent (agreement), dissolving legislatures
34. What were the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation? 34. Lack of power and strength to enforce laws, no ability to tax, weak central government, too hard to amend (change), no national court system, central govt. could not control trade between the states, and each state had its own currency (money)
35. What was it difficult to amend laws under the Articles of Confederation? 35. It required the approval of all 13 states.
36. What was Shay's Rebellion? 36. An uprising of farmers, due to heavy state taxes levied on them by the new American government under the Articles of Confederation.
37. Why did the Articles of Confederation have to be replaced? 37. Shay's Rebellion and the debt (money that is owed) of state government.
38. What is a federal system of government? 38. A form of government where power is divided between federal (national) and state governments.
39. Who were the Federalists? 39. The men who supported the Constitution
40. Who were the Anti-Federalists? 40. The men who opposed (against) the Constitution
