23. What was the effect of Thomas Paine's pamphlet Common Sense? 23. A majority of the delegates favored independence and allowed regular American people to understand why they should want independence.
24. A government based on a representative democracy is called what? 24. a republic
25. Why did colonists become increasingly unhappy with the British government? They were unhappy with British policies regarding individual rights and taxation without representation in British parliament.
26. What did the Tea Act of 1773 require colonists to do? 26. To buy tea ONLY from the British East India Company
27. What was the effect of the French & Indian War in angering colonists? 27. It angered colonists that they could not move and settle West on lands won during the war.
28. How did the colonists react to the Stamp Act? 28. The boycotted (stopped buying) British goods.
29. What does the phrase "No taxation without representation" mean? 29. That only their elected representatives had the right to tax them. If they could not have representatives in the British parliament, they could not pass tax laws on them.
30. What did the Quartering Act do? 30. Required colonists to provide housing and meals for British soldiers for free.
