11. What is direct democracy? A democracy in which the people vote firsthand on all government issues
12. What is representative democracy? A government in which citizens choose someone to govern on their behalf
13. What is an oligarchy? Government is ruled by a few wealthy people
14. What is tyranny? Abuse of power by the ruler.
15. Montesquieu's idea about the structure of government was called what? Separation of Powers
16. Why did Montesquieu's ideas about government lead to three branches? He believed that power should be divided so that no one branch would become too powerful and threaten people's rights.
17. What was Locke's Social Contract Theory? The people give up some rights to be ruled by the government; in return government has to protect people's rights.
18. How did Locke's Social Contract Theory influence the Founding Fathers? Colonists felt that the governor put British interests above their own rights as American colonists.
19. Which Enlightenment thinker did Thomas Jefferson reference in the Declaration of Independence when he wrote "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness?" John Locke's theory of natural rights
20. What is the relationship between natural rights and the role of government? People agree to give up some rights to be ruled by a government, but if the government fails to protect the rights, the social contract is broken and the people can choose new leaders.
