Long Bone Anatomy

Parts of the Long Bone Vocabulary

Proximal Epiphysis Knobby end of the bone closer to the trunk
Endosteum Connective tissue membrane lining the medullary cavity
Medullary Cavity Hollow space in the diaphysis and full of yellow marrow
Yellow Marrow Stores fat
Diaphysis Shaft of the bone
Nutrient Foramen Small hole for blood vessels to enter and exit the bone
Distal Epiphysis Knobby end of the bone further from the trunk
Articular Cartilage Protects the ends of long bones from wear and tear
Spongy Bone Makes up the inside of the epiphysis and full of red marrow
Red Marrow Filled with stem cells that create blood cells
Epiphyseal Plate Made of hyaline cartilage which ossifies and regrows repeatedly causing growth in height
Compact Bone Makes up the diaphysis and outside of the bone
Periosteum Connective tissue membrane lining the outside of a bone
