Parts of the Long Bone Vocabulary

| Proximal Epiphysis | Knobby end of the bone closer to the trunk |
| Endosteum | Connective tissue membrane lining the medullary cavity |
| Medullary Cavity | Hollow space in the diaphysis and full of yellow marrow |
| Yellow Marrow | Stores fat |
| Diaphysis | Shaft of the bone |
| Nutrient Foramen | Small hole for blood vessels to enter and exit the bone |
| Distal Epiphysis | Knobby end of the bone further from the trunk |
| Articular Cartilage | Protects the ends of long bones from wear and tear |
| Spongy Bone | Makes up the inside of the epiphysis and full of red marrow |
| Red Marrow | Filled with stem cells that create blood cells |
| Epiphyseal Plate | Made of hyaline cartilage which ossifies and regrows repeatedly causing growth in height |
| Compact Bone | Makes up the diaphysis and outside of the bone |
| Periosteum | Connective tissue membrane lining the outside of a bone |
