| Anatomical Position | The standard reference position for the body; standing with arms hanging at sides with palms forward, gives meaning to directional terms |
| Autopoiesis | Concept of self-organization and self-maintenance as characteristic of all living organisms |
| Decomposition Reaction | Chemical reaction that breaks down a substance into two or more simpler substances |
| Ionic Bond | Electrocovalent bond; bond formed by transferring of electrons from one atom to another |
| Plasma Membrane | Membrane that separates the contents of a cell from the tissue fluid, encloses the cytoplasm, and forms the outer boundary of the cell |
| Tight Junction | Connection between cells at which they are joined by "collars" of tightly fused membrane |
| Connective Tissue | Most abundant and widely distributed tissue in the body |
| Epithelial Tissue | Tissue type that covers the body and its parts; lines various parts of the body; forms continuous sheets that contain no bloos vessels; classified according to shape and arrangement |
| Cutaneous Membrane | Primary organ of the integumentary system |
| Melanocyte | Cell type in the stratum basale of the skin that produces melanin pigment granules, releasing them to other nearby skin cells |
| Epidermis | Outermost layer of the skin; sometimes called the "false" skin |
| Hypodermis | Loose layer fascia under the skin, rich in fat and areolar tissue located beneath the dermis; also called subcutaneous layer or superficial fascia |
| Elastic Cartilage | Cartilage with elastic, as well as collagenous fibers; provides elasticity and firmness as in, for example, the cartialge of the external ear |
| Epiphysis | End of a long bone; also, the pineal body of the brain |
| Appendicular Skeleton | Bones of the upper and lower extremities of the body |
| Axial Skeleton | Bones of the head, neck, and torso |
