Organ Systems
Functions of Human Organ Systems
| Term | Function |
|---|---|
| integumentary system | forms external body covering, protects deeper tissues, synthesizes vitamin D, houses cutaneous receptors (nerves), sweat and oil glands, and hair follicles |
| How many body systems are there? | ELEVEN |
| reproductive system | produces eggs or semen to create offspring with the opposite system other structures are to fertilize and develop the fetus |
| digestive system | breaks down food into absorbable units to enter the blood stream for distribution to body cells; indigestible foodstuffs are eliminated as feces |
| urinary system (excretory) | eliminates nitrogenous waste from the body; regulates water, electrolytes, and acid-base balance of blood |
| respiratory system | through the gas exchange of breathing provides oxygen to blood and removes carbon dioxide |
| cardiovascular system | the heart pumps the blood and the blood carries oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients and waste through the blood vessels |
| skeletal system | protects and supports body organs, provides framework for muscle movements, blood cells formed within bones where nutrients are also stored |
| muscular system | maintains posture, allows manipulation of the environment, locomotion and produces heat |
| nervous system | the control system of the body, it responds to internal and external stimuli by activating appropriate muscles and glands |
| endocrine system | glands secrete the hormones that regulate growth, reproduction, and metabolism (nutrient use by body cells) |
| lymphatic system (immunity) | returns leaked fluid from vessels back to blood, disposes of debris in lymphatic stream, houses lymphocytes (WBC), provides immune response against foreign substances in the body |
