Functions of Human Organ Systems

integumentary system forms external body covering, protects deeper tissues, synthesizes vitamin D, houses cutaneous receptors (nerves), sweat and oil glands, and hair follicles
How many body systems are there? ELEVEN
reproductive system produces eggs or semen to create offspring with the opposite system other structures are to fertilize and develop the fetus
digestive system breaks down food into absorbable units to enter the blood stream for distribution to body cells; indigestible foodstuffs are eliminated as feces
urinary system (excretory) eliminates nitrogenous waste from the body; regulates water, electrolytes, and acid-base balance of blood
respiratory system through the gas exchange of breathing provides oxygen to blood and removes carbon dioxide
cardiovascular system the heart pumps the blood and the blood carries oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients and waste through the blood vessels
skeletal system protects and supports body organs, provides framework for muscle movements, blood cells formed within bones where nutrients are also stored
muscular system maintains posture, allows manipulation of the environment, locomotion and produces heat
nervous system the control system of the body, it responds to internal and external stimuli by activating appropriate muscles and glands
endocrine system glands secrete the hormones that regulate growth, reproduction, and metabolism (nutrient use by body cells)
lymphatic system (immunity) returns leaked fluid from vessels back to blood, disposes of debris in lymphatic stream, houses lymphocytes (WBC), provides immune response against foreign substances in the body
