Anatomy Chapter 1
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Anterior (Ventral) | Toward or at the front of the body. |
| Proximal | Closer to the origin of the body part or the point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk. |
| Distal | Farther from the origin of a body part or the point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk. |
| Frontal (Coronal) Plane | Divides body into anterior and posterior. |
| Abdominal-Pelvic Cavity | Contains digestive organs surrounded by peritoneum. |
| Parietal layer | Lines the cavity walls. |
| Visceral layer | Covers the organs. |
| Cranial | Towards the head end or upper part of the body. |
| Caudal | Away from the head end or toward the lower part of a structure or body. |
| Dorsal | Toward or at the back of the body. |
| Lateral | Away from the midline of the body. |
| Away from the midline of the body. | Toward or at the midline of the body. |
| Superficial | Toward the body surface. |
| Deep | Away from the body surface. |
| Midsagittal Plane | Divides body into right and left. |
| Transverse Plane | Divides the body into superior and inferior sections. |
| Divides the body into superior and inferior sections. | Includes cranial cavity (brain) and vertebral cavity (spinal cord). |
| Ventral Body Cavity | Includes thoracic and abdominal-pelvic cavities. |
| Thoracic Cavity | Chest area containing the heart and lungs. |
| Serous Membranes | Serous membranes are thin, double-layered tissues that line body cavities and cover organs, reducing friction by secreting lubricating serous fluid. |
| Intermediate | Between a more medial and a more lateral structure. |
| Pleura | Serous membrane of the lungs. |
| Pericardium | Serous membrane of the heart. |
| Peritoneum | Serous membrane of the abdominal cavity and organs. |
| distal | farther from the origin of a body part or the point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk |
| Cranial cavity | brain |
| Vertebral cavity | spinal corda |
| dorsal body cavity | cranial and vertebral |
| superior mediastinum | esophagus and aorta |
| Parietal pericardium | outer layer |
| outer layer | Parietal pericardium, Pericardial space, and Visceral pericardium |
| Parietal pericardium | Outer layer |
| Pericardial space | contains serous fluid, which reduces friction between the parietal and visceral layers during heart movement. |
| Visceral pericardium | Inner layer, directly covers organ |
