NC vs US, all types
| Term | Definition |

| NC District Court | first level of the court system for many types of cases in NC, and deals with less serious matters & smaller claims. Cases are heard by a single judge with no jury. |
| NC Superior Court | the court of general jurisdiction in NC, meaning almost any type of cases are heard. Trials are typically held before a judge and jury. |
| NC Court of Appeals | an intermediate appellate NC court that reviews decisions made by lower courts to ensure the law was applied correctly. Doesn’t retry the case but looks at the legal aspects of the case |
| NC Supreme Court | the final authority on state law and has the power to overturn lower court decisions. Hears fewer cases and typically handles significant legal issues or cases of broad public importance. |
| US District Court | the first court where federal cases are heard. Deals with both civil and criminal cases under federal law, and has original jurisdiction over these cases. Trials are held before a judge, and sometimes a jury. |
| US Court of Appeals | an intermediate appellate court that reviews appeals from federal district courts. Determines whether the law was applied correctly. |
| US Supreme Court | the final authority on federal law and constitutional matters. Hears appeals from lower appellate courts, and it can choose which cases to hear based on significance or constitutional/national importance. |
