Skeletal System

| amphiarthroses | semi movable joints; such as the pubic symphysis or between the vertebrae |
| diarthroses | another name for synovial joints; freely movable joints |
| true ribs | part of the thoracic cage; join the sternum directly |
| false ribs | part of the thoracic cage; join the sternum INDIRECTLY by way of cartilage |
| floating ribs | part of the thoracic cage; do not attach to the sternum |
| foramen magnum | large hole at the base of the skull for passage of the spinal cord |
| flexion | movement that decreases the joint angle |
| extension | movement that increases the joint angle |
| abduction | movement moving a limb away from the midline of the body |
| adduction | movement moving a limb toward the midline of the body |
| supination | rotating the palm upward |
| pronation | rotating the palm downward |
| scoliosis | abnormal lateral curvature of the spine |
| kyphosis | abnormal thoracic curvature of the spine |
| lordosis | abnormal lumbar curvature of the spine |
| inversion | turning the sole of the foot inward |
| eversion | turning the sole of the foot outward |
| circumduction | movement of a body part in wide circles |
| rotation | movement of a body part around its own axis |
| saddle joint | one bone arches and the other fits into the arch; as seen where the metacarpals and carpals meet |
| ball and socket joint | the head of one bone fits into a cup of another bone; as seen in the shoulder and hip joints |
| pivot joint | a small projection of one bone fits into a ring of another one and allows rotation; such as between the ulna and radius |
| hinge joint | convex surface of one bone fits into the concave surface of another; as seen in the elbow and knee joints |
| gliding joint | flat or slightly curved surfaces that slide or twist; as seen between the carpals |
| condyloid joint | an oval shaped protrusion fits into the elliptical cavity of another bone; as seen between the metacarpals and phalanges |
