| Double Jeopardy | prevents a person from being put on trial twice for the same crime. |
| Eminent Domain | the power of the government to take private property for public use if they pay a fair price for it. |
| Right to bear arms | protects the right of well-organized citizens (militia) to possess weapons in order to protect their rights. |
| Reserved powers | powers that are not given to the federal government in the Constitution and are therefore powers that belong to the states. |
| Right to petition | the right to make a complaint to the government without fear of punishment. |
| Right to legal counsel | the right for a person accused of a crime to have an attorney help them in their case. |
| Due process of law | set of legal procedures that protect individuals from unfair government actions and ensures that life, liberty, or property is not taken without a fair process. |
| Unenumerated rights | rights that are not explicitly stated in the Constitution but are still protected. |
| Bill of Rights | the first ten amendments of the Constitution that protect individual rights. |
| Protection against illegal searches and seizures | the government cannot search or take a person's property into evidence without a warrant and probable cause. |
| Freedom of the press | the right of the media to publish and share information, opinions, and ideas without government interference. |
| Plead the fifth (protection against self-incrimination) | individuals suspected of a crime have the right to remain silent under questioning so as to not incriminate themselves |
