Parties and Ideology

Definitions

TermDefinition
Political Party A group of people who work together to win elections and control the government.
Ideology A set of ideas or beliefs about how the government should work.
Libertarian A person who believes in very limited government and strong personal freedom.
Totalitarian A government where one leader or group has total control over everything, and people have few freedoms.
Two Party System A system where two main political parties compete for power in the government.
Winner-take-all A system where the candidate who gets the most votes wins everything, and others get nothing.
Third Party A political party that is not one of the two main parties (in the U.S., not Democrat or Republican).
"Watch dog" A group or person who watches the government or politicians to make sure they are doing the right thing.
Democrat A member of the Democratic Party, which generally supports more government involvement in the economy and social issues.
Republican A member of the Republican Party, which generally supports less government involvement in the economy and social issues.
Liberal A person who believes in change and supports government programs to help people.
Conservative A person who believes in keeping traditions and wants less government involvement in people's lives.
Moderate A person whose views are in the middle between liberal and conservative.
Political Spectrum A way to show the different political beliefs, from liberal to conservative.
General Election The main election where voters choose who will hold a government office, like president or senator.
Primary Election An election where members of a political party choose their candidate for the general election.
National Convention A big meeting where a political party officially chooses its candidate for president.
Lobbyist A person who tries to influence government leaders to support certain ideas or businesses.
Political Platform A list of the important issues and ideas that a political party or candidate supports.
