Chapter 15 Axial Muscles

TermDefinition
External Oblique Origin: ribs, lower eight. Insertion: pelvis, iliac crest and pubis by way of the inguinal ligament, Linea Alba, by way of an aponeurosis. Function: compresses abdomen, rotates trunk laterally.
Internal Oblique Origin: pelvis, iliac crest, and iliopsoas fascia; Lumbodorsal fascia. Insertion: ribs, lower, three; linea Alba. Function: important postural function. All of abdominal muscles is to pull the front of the pelvis upward thereby flattening the lumbar curve
Iliocostalis Group Origin: various regions of the pelvis and ribs. Insertion: ribs and vertebrae, superior to the origin. Function: extends laterally flexes the vertebral column.
Longissimus Group Origin: cervical and thoracic vertebrae, ribs. Insertion: mastoid process, upper cervical vertebrae, or upper lumbar vertebrae. Function: extends head, neck, or vertebral column.
Diaphragm Origin: lower circumference of thorax. Insertion: central tendon of diaphragm. Function: enlarges thorax, causing inspiration.
External Intercostals Origin: rib, lower border, forward fibers. Insertion: rib, upper border of rib below the origin. Function: elevate and separate ribs.
Internal Intercostals Origin: Rib or inner surface, lower border, backward fibers. Insertion: rib, upper border of rib below the origin. Function: depress ribs, pulling them together.
Spinalis Group Origin: lower, cervical or lower thoracic, upper lumbar vertebrae. Insertion: upper cervical or middle upper thoracic vertebrae superior to the origin. Function: extends the neck or vertebral column.
Splenius Origin: spinous process of the vertebrae. Insertion: lateral occipital, mastoid or transverse process of the vertebrae C1-C4. Function: rotates, extends neck and flexes neck laterally.
Interspinales Group Origin: spinous processes of the vertebrae. Insertion: spin processes of the next superior vertebrae. Function: extends back and neck.
