Anatomy Study Stack 1 (weeks 1-5)

TermDefinition
Anatomy The study of the structure of an organism and the relationships of its parts.
Eponyms Terms that are based on a person’s name.
Probability distribution Refers to the probability of finding an electron at any specific location outside the nucleus.
Octet rule Atoms with fewer than eight electrons in the outer energy level will attempt to lose, gain, or share electrons with other atoms to achieve stability.
Fluid mosaic model The fluid mosaic model shows us that the molecules of a cell membrane are bound tightly enough to form a continuous sheet but loosely enough that the molecules can slip past one another.
Cytoskeleton The cell’s internal supporting framework.
Extracellular matrix (ECM) The fluid environment that fills the spaces between the cells of the body.
Dermoepidermal junction (DEJ) The area where the cells of the epidermis meet the connective tissue cells of the dermis.
Ligaments Fibrous bands that help hold the various bones together into an organized skeleton.
Lacunae Small spaces in bone matrix that contain tissue fluid and in which bone cells lie imprisoned between the hard layers.
Atomic number The number of protons in an atom’s nucleus.
Mass number (atomic mass) Refers to the mass of a single atom.
Plasma membrane The outer boundary of the cell
Cilia Microscopic cell extensions, each supported internally by a cylindrical arrangement of microtubules.
Microvilli Microscopic fingerlike projections
