| Prime Mover | A muscle that directly performs a specific movement |
| Antagonist | A muscle that directly opposes the prime mover |
| Synergist | Muscles that contract at the same time as prime movers |
| Fixator | Function as joint stabilizers |
| Origin | The point of the muscle that does not move during contraction |
| Insertion | Point of attachment that does move during muscle contraction |
| Parallel muscle | Vary in length, long strap-like muscle with parallel fascicles are the most typical |
| Convergent muscle | Muscles that radiate from a smaller to a wider point of attachment |
| Pennate muscle | Unipennate muscle have fascicles the anchor to only one side of connective tissue, Bipennate have a type of double feather attachment of fascicles, Multipennate muscles have multiple interconnecting quill like fascicles converge on a common point |
| Fusiform Muscle | Fascicles that may be close to parallel in the center but converge to a tendon at one or both ends |
