Epithelial Tissue
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Simple Squamous | Single layer of flat cells Functions: allow diffusion and filtration, some perform secretion Locations: linings of heart, blood vessels, body cavities, and kidney capsules |
| Simple Cuboidal | Single layer of cube like cells Functions: absorption and secretion Locations: forming kidney tubules and ducts of glands |
| Simple Columnar | Single layer of tall cells Functions: absorption and secretion Locations: lining digestive tracts, some gland ducts, and uterine tubes |
| Ciliated pseudo-stratified columnar | "Falsely layered" rectanglur arrangement Functions: secretion and sweeping of mucus Locations: lining the respiratory tract |
| Stratified Squamous | Multi-layered flat cells Functions: protection of d tissues Locations: (Non-keratinized form) lines the mouth, esophagus, and vagina (Keratinized form) builds the epidermis of the skin |
| Keratinized Stratified Squamous | Keratin- wavy protein, waterproof Location- Stratum corneum, nails, outer shaft of hair, harder part of the mouth Function- protection |
| Transitional Epithelial | Location- lining of bladder Function- protection, distention, cells change shape |
| Pseudo-stratified | "Falsely-layered" - Ciliated columnar cells |
| Transitional | Multilayered cells whose apical cells change between squamous and cuboidal depending on the stretch of the organ Function: stretches to allow distension of the structures they line Locations: lining the urinary bladders and ureters (men’s urinary tract) |
| Cilia | Hairlike processes that can create a sweeping action |
| Goblet cells | Single celled glands that secrete mucus |
| Non-Keratinized | Superficial cells are living and contain a nuclei Functions: maintains a moist surface Locations: mouth, esophagus, and areas of the tongue’s surface |
| Stratified cuboidal and columnar | Usually 2 or more layers of cub like or tall cells Locations: rare in body, only found in the ducts of some glands |
| Apical surface | Top layer of cell |
| Basement membrane | 2 layers basal lamina (ET) reticular lamina (CT) |
| Endocrine | - secrete hormone - no ducts - rely on blood |
| Exocrine | - contain ducts - tear, saliva, sweat |
