Planes/directional
planes of the body and directional terms
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| midsagittal (median) | plane that cuts the body in half down the middle |
| frontal (coronal) | plane that cuts the body in half between anterior and posterior |
| transverse | plane that cuts the body between superior and inferior |
| anterior | front of the body |
| posterior | back of the body |
| medial | towards the midline/midsagittal line |
| lateral | away from the midline/midsagittal line |
| distal | farther away from the center of the body; used to describe arms and legs |
| proximal | closer towards the center of the body; used to describe arms and legs |
| superior | towards the top of the body |
| inferior | towards the bottom of the body |
| ventral | synonym to anterior (front of the body) |
| dorsal | synonym to posterior (back of the body) |
| superficial | describes something on the surface of the body |
| deep | describes something on the inside of the body |
| caudal | synonym to inferior (bottom of the body) |
| anatomical position | always assume the body is in this position 1- standing 2- face front 3- feet parallel 4- palms facing forward 5- arms at sides |
