Anatomical Terms

| Term | Definition |

| anatomical position | body is standing erect, face forward, with the upper limbs at the sides and the palms forward. |
| superior | body part is above another part |
| inferior | body part is below another part |
| anterior | (ventral) towards the front |
| posterior | (dorsal) towards the back |
| medial | midline dividing the body into equal right and left halves |
| lateral | towards the side, away from midline |
| bilateral | paired structures, one of which is on each side of midline |
| ipsilateral | structures on the same side |
| contralateral | structures on the opposite side |
| proximal | a body part that is closer to a point of attachment to the trunk than another body part is |
| distal | a body part is farther from a point of attachment to the trunk than another body part is |
| superficial | situated near the surface |
| deep | parts that are more internal than superficial parts |
| sagittal | lengthwise plane that divides the body into right and left portions |
| transverse | (horizontal) plane that divides the body into superior and inferior portions |
| frontal | (coronal) plane that divides the body into anterior and posterior portions |
| epigastric region | upper middle portion |
| right and left hypochondriac regions | lie on each side of the epigastric region |
| umbilicial region | middle portion |
| right and left lateral (lumbar) regions | lie on each side of the umbilical region |
| pubic (hypogastric) region | lower middle portion |
| right and left inguinal (iliac) regions | lie on each side of the pubic region |
