| Government | a group of people that have the power to rule in a territory, according to the law. |
| Monarchy | a government system where one person, the monarch, is the leader |
| Dictatorship | form of government in which a person or a small group rules with almost unlimited power |
| Democracy | a government run by the people |
| Representative Democracy | a system of government in which all eligible citizens vote on representatives to pass laws for them |
| Republic | a form of government in which citizens elect representatives to rule the state. |
| Laws | a set of rules that people are made to follow |
| Constitution | the framework for the federal government of the United States |
| Popular sovereignty | a concept where the people hold the power to make decisions . |
| Limited government | a system in which the leaders have little powers over the laws without approval from other branches |
| Delegates | a person sent with power to act for another or others |
| Compromise | when two parties come to an agreement |
| Bicameral | having two houses as a legislative body |
| Ratify (Ratification) | the official approval |
| Preamble | the introductory part of a constitution |
| Federalist | someone who believes in, supports, or follows a federal system of gov't. |

| Due Process of Law | the state and the country have to respect a citizen's legal rights. |

| Virginia Declaration of Rights | Served as a model for the U.S. Bill of Rights |
| Charters of the VA Company of London | guaranteed the rights of the Englishmen to the colonists |
| Articles of Confederation | First form of gov't. Weak. Led to the Constitution. |
| VA Statute for Religious Freedom | freedom of religious beliefs and opinions. |
| Declaration of Independence | 1) Stated grievances against the King. 2) Declared the colonies independent. 3) Affirmed "certain unalienable rights" (Life, Liberty, pursuit of happiness) 4) idea that all people are created equal. |
